The UNH-IOL has a number of commercially available traffic generators that are used in 10Gb Ethernet conformance testing. These traffic generators allow us to send custom frames to DUTs (Devices Under Test) during conformance and interoperability testing. We can customize the type, size, and data payload of the frames, and we can even use these traffic generators to send specific patterns of different frames. Yet many tests of the underlying physical layer we identify in our test suites require a level of control beyond what these traffic generators are capable of.

Nearing the final week of my internship I can say that I am amazed by the quality of my experience at the IOL. Not only have I been able to visit a number of companies ranging from larger corporations like Liberty Mutual and Verizon to smaller startups like QA Café, but I was able to use the knowledge learned in high school and put it to use in a real world application. On top of putting my skills to use, I have also learned many new skills.

In September 2015, the UNH-IOL opened a new consortium in the Broadband testing services called G.fast. G.fast is an emerging technology which leverages existing telephone copper networks, similar to DSL, to deliver incredibly high bandwidth. Optical networks are gaining popularity due to their high throughput capacity. Despite this, fibre is still not being integrated into residential homes due to the high costs involved as well as keeping the more fragile glass fibers protected.

The UNH-IOL DSL consortium offers testing based on the Broadband Forum TR-115 test plan. This test is an excellent starting point in understanding the overall quality and functionality of the modem or DSLAM’s (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer) VDSL2 transceiver. The test cases within this test plan cover a variety of different functions and capabilities that the transceivers should be able to perform.

The UNH-IOL has been a leader in testing Wireless LAN technologies and products since the inception of the IEEE 802.11 standards. The Wireless Testing is industry-supported and works with members to provide a neutral test environment with industry accepted test methodologies to promote and foster the interoperability of Wireless LAN devices. The lab offers testing services for both consumer and enterprise grade 802.11 stations and access points.

The Girls Who Code Club from Seacoast School of Technology, which is an afterschool program for girls of all ages (between the ages of 6 and 14) that focuses on their interest in learning more about programming and development, visited the UNH IOL on April 6, 2016 for their evening after school activity. This was their first field trip as a club and it was an unprecedented experience.
