UNH-IOL Propels G.fast Technology with Industry First Cross-Chipset Interoperability Demo at Broadband World Forum 2016

DURHAM, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL), an independent provider of broad-based testing and standards conformance services for the networking industry, announced today it will be hosting a multi-vendor G.fast interoperability demo in the Broadband Forum Interoperability Pavilion at the upcoming Broadband World Forum (BBWF), October 18 - 20, 2016 held at the ExCeL Convention Centre, Royal Victoria Dock, London. An industry first, the demonstration showcases interoperability between products from six companies based on chipsets from three different providers. Additionally, the UNH-IOL will be showing some live testing during the demo, based upon the forthcoming G.fast Certification Program.

“Organizing and hosting numerous interoperability plugfests, UNH-IOL, in partnership with the Broadband Forum, have played a vital role in maturing G.fast technology,” said Lincoln Lavoie, Senior Engineer, Broadband Technologies, UNH-IOL. “A truly pivotal point for G.fast technology, this industry first demo shows stakeholders that cross-chipset interoperability is real and becoming available.”

Companies taking part in UNH-IOL’s demo are Calix (NYSE:CALX); Digital Lightwave A Division of VeEX, Huawei; Metanoia Communications, Inc.; Technicolor; and Telebyte. UNH-IOL’s demo will show cross-chipset interoperability among solutions from multiple demarcation point unit (DPU) and customer premises equipment (CPE) vendors, based on different chipsets. Telebyte and Digital Lightwave will provide the test gear for the demonstration. Other chipsets included in the demo equipment are Broadcom and Sckipio. Located at booth D30 in the Broadband Forum Interoperability Pavilion, a showcase for interoperable equipment and solutions, featuring top vendors, test houses, and industry bodies, attendees will see additional demonstrations of the latest developments in G.fast, GPON, VDSL2, Device Management/Control, and Virtualization.

“Proving cross-chipset interoperability enables G.fast technology to become an even more powerful tool for service providers to achieve higher speeds to the subscriber over short distances,” said Tom Starr, Broadband Forum President. “This interoperability ultimately ‘future proofs’ the network, so that new devices can effortlessly work with already deployed devices, saving time and money.”

Designed to provide broadband connection speeds of up to 1Gbps over a single twisted pair cable, G.fast is tasked with meeting the ever-increasing demands of applications in homes and businesses around the world. For fast and cost-effective deployment, interoperability is key. Benefiting service providers, manufacturers, and end-users, cross-chipset interoperability provides a guarantee that CPE and DPU devices from multiple vendors will interoperate correctly, lowering testing, rollout, and troubleshooting costs. It also prevents operators from being “locked into” solutions provided by a single chipset supplier, expanding the choices of devices they can deploy in their network. This interoperability creates a more flexible, harmonious network, resulting in cost savings and acceleration of time to market allowing providers to meet the demands of their customers.

“Achieving high-performance interoperability for G.fast is a key enabler for cost effective and agile ultrafast deployments,” said Kevin Foster, General Manager CPE & Access, BT. “Communication Providers need attractive in-home and standards-based solutions that their end customers can self-install. The Broadband Forum’s work on interoperability underpins an ability for industry to deliver that goal.”
