Thank you for your interest in UNH-IOL's SPE Services

About UNH-IOL

UNH-IOL has been an integral part of the Ethernet industry for over 36 years, including the inception of Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) over a decade ago. Today, UNH-IOL assists the SPE industry in all areas of SPE (10Mbps to 10Gbps), SPoE, as well as protocol conformance validation for MAC, 802.1 / TSN and more.

In 2020, the UNH-IOL was approached by the APL Group to develop the necessary infrastructure and resources to implement Ethernet Advanced Physical Layer (APL) certification for the leading Industrial Automation groups making up the APL Group, including FieldComm Group, ODVA Inc., OPC Foundation and PROFIBUS Nutzerorganisation e.V. (PNO). Today, these leading organizations have access to UNH-IOL developed test hardware, software and test plans also known as Certification Test Specifications (CTS) to drive their APL Certification programs.

SPE at UNH-IOL

The team at UNH-IOL works closely with industry leaders, standards organizations (IEEE), Industry Alliances (Ethernet Alliance, OPEN Alliance, and most recently the SPE System Alliance), and T&M vendors such as Keysight, Rohde & Schwarz, Spirent, Teledyne LeCroy, etc.  to enable 3rd party, neutral, expert validation of products. Products we validate include media and connectors, channels and cables, silicon validation, and full system validation. Our partners benefit from detailed technical reports to improve their solutions, and to use as collateral to demonstrate to customers their compliance to required standards.  Our extensive expertise and debugging capabilities assist companies in resolving issues from the physical layer, through silicon configuration, to system integration and beyond.

10BASE-T1L Silicon Validation

Silicon providers, prove your compliance to IEEE requirements with our 10BASE-T1L Testing Service, offering PMA, PCS, PHY Control and Clause 98 Auto-Negotiation conformance testing, and interoperability testing. Independently verified silicon is an essential component of building confidence in technology adoption and proving multi-source availability. Current certification programs expect silicon to have been validated, ensure your solution is based on UNH-IOL independently verified solutions

Advanced Physical Layer (APL)

Let us help you with cost-effective in-house test capabilities based on APL Group approved and validated solutions.  We can also assist you with pre-testing and certification testing of your APL Products for the APL DATA CTS and APL POWER CTS.

10BASE-T1S Validation

Silicon and system implementers benefit from UNH-IOL’s offering of 3rd party conformance validation of 10BASE-T1S PMA, PCS, PLCA, and MAC (full and half duplex), as well as Interoperability testing. Learn more here.

Our third 10BASE-T1S plugfest is currently being planned for 2025, contact us with any questions.  If you can’t attend our third plugfest, we look forward to seeing you at our fourth!

Power over Ethernet (PoE / SPoE / PoDL)

UNH-IOL and the Ethernet Alliance (EA) developed the EA PoE Certification program for which UNH-IOL is an authorized test lab,  offering certification for Gen1 and Gen2 Powered Devices (PDs) and Power Sourcing Equipment (PSEs).  UNH-IOL is also the EA Auditing lab to verify testing performed by in-house and other 3rd party authorized labs.

As an industry first: Conformance testing for Single-pair Power over Ethernet (SPoE) per IEEE 802.3 Clause 104 is also offered.  First demonstrated at the recent EA Plugfest in March 2024, learn more about this service from our webinar recording: Demystifying the Powers of Single-Pair Ethernet (SPE).

EA Certification services, Cl104 conformance, Interoperability testing and more are available as part of the UNH-IOL PoE Testing Service, contact us today.

Single Pair Ethernet (SPE)

UNH-IOL and the OPEN Alliance have worked closely together since the start of SPE to develop international standards for conformance and interoperability testing.  100BASE-T1,  1000BASE-T1 and MGBASE-T1 specifications are completed, or in progress.  For example:  ISO 21111-6.  These testing standards start as UNH-IOL Test plans, such as those for 100BASE-T1 here,  or 1000BASE-T1 here.   Contact us with your 100BASE-T1 test needs, 1000BASE-T1 TypeA or TypeB test needs,  as well as MGBASE-T1 validation requirements.

Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) and more

UNH-IOL and the Avnu Alliance have worked closely over the past decade to establish detailed conformance and interoperability testing for certification of AVB and TSN protocols. UNH-IOL is a recognized test facility (RTF) of the Avnu Alliance, and offers various certification testing programs for the industry.  Learn more at the link below:

In addition to these current services, UNH-IOL is continuing to expand our services for:

  • IEEE 1588 PTP validation services, including gPTP (IEEE802.1AS)
  • MACsec (IEEE  802.1AE)
  • IEEE 802.1Q Bridge validation (MSRP, RSTP, LLDP, etc)
