Application Questions

Who is eligible to apply for the internship program?

The program is geared for students who have just completed their Junior year of high school, rising seniors, interested in pursing a future in technology. Currently we are only able to offer this internship to residents of the United States.

What materials are required to apply?

Submit the following materials with the application: Completed Application including an Essay. The IOL will NOT accept incomplete applications and will only interview candidates if we receive all of the required materials.

Do I need to be from New England or New Hampshire to apply?

No! We accept applicants from around the United States and have had several past interns participate in the program from across the country. We encourage all students, regardless of location, to apply.

General Questions

What days of the week and hours are the interns expected to work?

The internship program typically runs for five weeks in the June/August timeframe. The interns work Monday - Friday from 9am - 5pm (a lunch break is provided).

Is lunch provided?

The interns are expected to bring their own lunch. There are many restaurants available downtown Durham, NH to purchase lunch. 

Does UNH have to be the top college choice in order to apply?

The application requires that you list your top three college choices. UNH does not have to be at the top of that list however students who do plan to attend UNH may be eligible for part time employment after the program is complete.

Yes, we pay our interns a competitive hourly rate.

Is there an opportunity to visit local technical companies?

Yes, typically we bring the interns to local technical organizations that will help increase awareness of potential career fields. During the visit, the interns have the opportunity to meet and speak face to face with engineers and ask valuable questions. Companies we have visited in the past include; Liberty Mutual, Verizon, Texas Instruments, Dell and SingleDigits.

What does a typical day look like?

During the day, the interns will work on assigned projects and also work one-on-one with IOL engineers. 

Is housing provided?

UNH Housing may or may not be available for this program. 

Do I need to bring my own laptop?

No, the IOL will provide all equipment for the interns to use that is necessary in order to accomplish assigned tasks.

Is there a dress code?

The IOL does not have a formal dress code, however we expect the interns to appear tidy and presentable each day. During the company visits, we require the interns to wear business casual attire. The IOL does not tolerate inappropriate clothing with rips, holes, derogatory slogans, etc.
