| Abstract: |
The InterOperability Laboratory at the University of New Hampshire has developed an automated test set-up to measure clock jitter in Token Ring Local Area Networks. An unacceptable amount of variance was observed in multiple measurements taken for any one Token Ring configuration using this set-up. The observed jitter patterns sometimes did not match expectations. The accuracy of the measurement set-up was also unknown. This thesis presents a study of the accuracy of the measurement set-up. The dependence of the jitter measurements on the test set-up and equipment is analyzed. A quantitative study of the effects of secondary jitter sources, such as crosstalk and reflections in the physical media, on the jitter measurements is presented. Finally, recommendations on making clean jitter measurements for verification of jitter conformance to the IEEE 802.5 standard are given. |
