Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) Multi-System Interoperability Test Suite [Top]

Abstract: The operation of Spanning Tree Protocol provides for the recovery of networks in the event of link failure. Spanning Tree Protocol also helps guard against the creation (either accidental or intentional) of data loops in the active topology. This test suite has been designed based on the set of definitions, principles, and requirements that pertain to IEEE Std. 802.1D-1998. The test suite is designed to help determine whether or not the DUT will interoperate in accordance with the standard during normal operation.

Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) Multi-System Interoperability Test Suite [Top]

Abstract: The operation of Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) provides for the recovery of network connectivity following the failure of a Bridge, Bridge Port, or LAN. The protocol also provides for the recovery of network connectivity following the inclusion of a new Bridge, Bridge Port, or LAN. Unlike the original (protocol version 01) Spanning Tree Protocol, which relies upon fixed timer values in all cases, RSTP (protocol version 02) uses fixed timer values only as worst-case delays (and to ensure backwards-compatibility). Thus, under normal circumstances and in the absence of legacy equipment, the time needed for recovery of network connectivity is determined by a Device.s implementation of the protocol. This can result in extremely "rapid" convergence times. This test suite has been designed based on the set of requirements (expressed in state machine diagrams, tables, and text) defined in IEEE Std. 802.1D-2004 that pertain to RSTP. The test suite is designed to help determine whether or not the DUT will interoperate in accordance with the standard during normal operation.

Abstract: IEEE Std. 802.1Q-2003, clause 13 states: "The MSTP algorithm and protocol provides simple and full connectivity for frames assigned to any given VLAN throughout a Bridged Local Area Network comprising arbitrarily interconnected Bridges, each operating MSTP, STP, or RSTP. MSTP allows frames assigned to different VLANs to follow separate paths, each based on an independent Multiple Spanning Tree Instance (MSTI), within Multiple Spanning Tree (MST) Regions composed of LANs and or MST Bridges. These Regions and the other Bridges and LANs are connected into a single Common Spanning Tree (CST)"

Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) Multi-System Interoperability Test Suite [Top]

Abstract: The operation of Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) provides for the creation of multiple, logically separated, .virtual. LANs within the bounds of a single Bridged LAN. Frames associated with a VLAN are not eligible for transmission on any other VLAN. This test suite has been designed based on the set of definitions, principles, and requirements that pertain to IEEE Std. 802.1Q-2003. The test suite is designed to help determine whether or not the DUT will interoperate in accordance with the standard during normal operation.

Abstract: The operation of Link Aggregation provides for using multiple physical links as one logical point to point connection between two points in a CSMA/CD MAC network. This test suite has been designed based on the set of definitions, principles, and requirements that pertain to IEEE Std. 802.3ad. The test suite is designed to help determine whether or not the DUT will interoperate in accordance with the standard during normal operation.

Abstract: This test suite examines interoperability of the Link Layer Discovery Protocol (IEEE Std. 802.1AB-2005) in a multi-vendor environment. The test suite verifies functionality of the following TLVs: mandatory, optional, organizationally specific (802.1, 802.3, etc). Device behavior is observed during the following scenarios: basic interoperability, network initialization and shutdown, port failure, and in a Spanning Tree environment.

Abstract: IEEE Std 802.1X-2004 states: "Port-based network access control makes use of the physical access characteristics of IEEE 802 LAN infrastructures in order to provide a means of authenticating and authorizing devices attached to a LAN port that has point-to-point connection characteristics, and of preventing access to that port in cases in which the authentication and authorization process fails." This test suite has been designed based on the set of definitions, principles, requirements, and terminology that pertain to IEEE Std 802.1X-2004. The test suite is designed to help determine whether or not the DUT will interoperate in accordance with the standard during normal operation.

Abstract: This suite of tests has been developed to help implementers evaluate the functionality of their Spanning Tree based products. This test suite has been designed based on the C code implementation of the Spanning Tree Algorithm given in sub-clause 8.9 of the IEEE Std. 802.1D-1998. The test suite focuses on testing the functions in this Spanning Tree algorithm that will determine whether or not the device under test (DUT) will operate the Spanning Tree Protocol properly under all conditions that can occur in a network. Because the C code is said to take precedence over the English description of the algorithm, all tests in this suite test only aspects of the Spanning Tree protocol that are handled in the example Spanning Tree code.

Abstract: The operation of Filtering Database provides Forwarding Process of frames with given values of destination MAC address parameter and VID which are to be forwarded through a given potential transmission Port. Filtering Database allows administrative control of Forwarding of frames with particular destination addresses and the inclusion in the Filtering Database of dynamic filtering information associated with Extended Filtering Services. This test suite has been designed based on the set of definitions, principles, and requirements that pertain to IEEE Std. 802.1D-1998 and IEEE Std. 802.1Q-1998. The test suite is designed to help determine whether or not the DUT will behave in accordance with the standards during normal operation.

Abstract: This Test Suite was designed based on IEEE Std. 802.1Q VLAN Quality of Service. IEEE Std 802.1Q-rev-d4 states: "The Mac Service includes a priority as a Quality of Service parameter. MA_UNITDATA.request primitives with a high priority may be given precedence over other request primitives". This Test Suite helps isolate problems within an IEEE 802.1Q-rev-d4 capable device that will affect interoperability.

Abstract: In 1998, Alteon Networks, Inc. promoted an initiative to increase the maximum size of the MAC Client Data field from 1500-bytes to 9000-bytes. This Test Suite has been designed to determine whether or not the DUT will behave in accordance with the industry standard practice during normal operation. These tests examine the DUT's Jumbo Frame functionality at ideal physical layer conditions.

Abstract: Hardware Rate Limiting enables providers to pinpoint bandwidth control and provision bandwidth dynamically. This Test Suite has been designed to determine whether or not the DUT will behave in accordance with the industry standard practice during normal operation. Behaviors tested by this Test Suite include rate limiting, granularity verification, and frame queuing on both ingress and egress.
