Author(s): Scott Valcourt
Last Updated: 06/24/1997
Abstract: This paper is an attempt to provide a brief summary of ATM, its beginnings, concepts and operation, as well as serve as a tool to bring the reader up to speed on what ATM is. Several opinions and future musings are drafted. Feel free to disagree. Finally, the paper will examine a glimpse into the future of ATM in the networking industry.

Monitoring Multi-Protocol Over ATM (MPOA) Transactions for Application to Interoperability Testing [Top]
Author(s): Venkataraman R. Natham
Last Updated: 09/1998
Abstract: The ATM Consortium of the Research Computing Center's (RCC) InterOperability Laboratory (IOL) has developed Multi-Protocol Over ATM (MPOA) Interoperability Test Suites. The test suites are used to verify certain minimum levels of interoperability between the devices under test and to increase the likelihood of reliable service when the device is used in a multi-vendor environment. The test suite also identifies problem areas that should be addressed to ensure satisfactory performance. The tests for MPOA Client (MPC) and MPOA Server (MPS) are done manually by performing each step specified in the test suite. The main objective of this thesis is to develop a framework to facilitate the automation of these test suites. A framework for testing the MPOA Client (MPC) was developed using the Hewlett Packard Broadband Series Test System (BSTS). ATM traffic between the device under test and the test system are monitored and captured using the Hewlett Packard BSTS. The BSTS provides a C programming interface to access captured records. The captured records are then decoded to provide a more detailed description of these transactions. A state machine is also designed that checks for the occurrences of necessary transactions for interoperability between these devices. In this process, at each state, certain conditions are checked to ascertain the validity of the information passed or requested. Tests were conducted with devices from various vendors at the InterOperability Laboratory. Results indicated the variations in the implementation of the protocol by the vendors involved, and the state machine was modified to include most of the variations found.

The ATM Forum [Top]
Last Updated: 2004
Abstract: The ATM Forum is an international non-profit organization formed with the objective of accelerating the use of ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) products and services through a rapid convergence of interoperability specifications. In addition, the Forum promotes industry cooperation and awareness.

Since its formation in 1991, The ATM Forum has generated very strong interest within the communications industry. Currently, The ATM Forum consists of approximately 80 member companies, and it remains open to any organization that is interested in accelerating the availability of ATM-based solutions.

The ATM Forum consists of a worldwide Technical Committee, marketing awareness programs such at Broadband Exchange, and the User Committee, through which ATM end-users participate.

Notes: Links of interest are the glossary of ATM terms and the beginner's overview of ATM.
