UNH-IOL Intro to Industry Program

A collaborative technology program for bright and motivated students in partnership with the UNH Computer Science Department.

Each year, the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Lab (UNH-IOL) and the UNH Computer Science Department recruits the brightest and most ambitious Computer Science students entering their freshman year to participate in our prestigious Intro to Industry program. The Intro to Industry program is a unique program that is designed to encourage students to engage in learning about the data communications industry outside of the classroom for one hour a week during the fall semester. The students have the opportunity to learn about the UNH-IOL as well as have hands on tasks that will supplement their classroom learning.

UNH-IOL Students Employees gain exposure to:

  • Pre-deployed and emerging technologies
  • Objective testing methodologies
  • Analysis and debugging procedures
  • Global corporations and experienced industry professionals
  • Advanced engineering and computer science principles
  • A network of like-minded peers
  • Industry Forums, Alliances, and Standards Organizations

Where Classroom Knowledge Meets Real-World Technologies

The highly qualified staff at the UNH-IOL have been training graduate and undergraduate engineers, computer scientists, and liberal arts students to apply classroom knowledge to real-world equipment and products since 1988. Student employees earn the opportunity to work with pre-deployed and emerging technologies long before they are available on the commercial markets. Engaging with the UNH-IOL also helps students gain and understanding of the data and telecommunications industry as a whole, including insight into future careers.

Computer Science Department Recommends the Program

"The UNH InterOperability Laboratory is a great resource for Computer Science students! It allows students to supplement their classroom learning with real-world experience by working with the IOL's industrial partners on the latest technologies.
Therefore, I fully endorse the Intro to Industry program which recognizes outstanding new Computer Science students by giving them a low-pressure opportunity in their first semester to explore all that the InterOperability Laboratory has to offer."

– Professor Philip Hatcher, Chair of Computer Science Department

What our past participants say

  • "The UNH-IOL's Intro to Industry program was an interesting way for me to jump into the field during my first semester at UNH. It provided a much-needed place outside the classroom to learn and experiment with several of the concepts covered and explore some unconventional and hands-on concepts as well."
    – Ben Decato, Fall 2008 Participant
  • "The Intro to Industry program is great for CS majors who are are looking to learn about current and future technology. It is a nice overview of what happens day to day at the IOL and even sets you up perfectly for a job once you completed the program!"
    – Jake Schwartz, Fall 2008 Participant
