Training the Engineers of Tomorrow...Today.

The UNH-IOL has a dual mission to provide a neutral environment to foster multivendor interoperability, conformance to standards and improvement of data networking, while educating students and preparing them for future employment in the industry.

As a full-scale, non-profit test lab, the UNH-IOL employs approximately 150 personnel, over 100 of which are undergraduate and graduate students. Student employees (or technicians as they are sometimes referred to at the lab) often emerge from the academic fields of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering and continue to attend classes at UNH while working at our facility.

Training efforts at the IOL incorporate both industry and academic expertise, which are paired with hands-on experience through active participation of test setup, configuration and debugging. From vendor communication, to updating devices, to confirming active link, to analyzing network captures and generating reports, our student technicians work closely with the lab's technical staff to become more familiar with industry standards and testing procedures while immersed in a professional environment. We introduce the student technicians to innovative, leading-edge technologies and prototypes while exposing them to diverse commercial device implementations. In doing so, we contribute to the development of exceptional technicians with versatile knowledge of the networking industry.

In an effort to meet the second half of our dual mission, we often partner with companies who express interest in hiring our students and coordinate site visits for recruitment at our facility. Through these conventions, our student employees can showcase their talents and skills, and companies can exchange communication regarding potential post-graduation job opportunities.

When it comes time to leave the IOL and blaze new paths in industry and beyond, we hope that our student technicians are excited, inspired and infused with the necessary knowledge to be successful in any career they choose.

Hello Jennifer, I work for Network World's events group. We are producing an IPv6 event in NYC on December 13th. This is a sponoship driven program but I was wondering if you would be interested in a barter program? The UNH IOL has many IPv6 members that may see value in the program but I have no idea how to contact them. Ethernet Technology SummitDuring the presentation, I will briefly touch on some advantages achieved by the integration of Storage, such as iSCSI or FCoE, onto a typical data network when using DCB (Data Center Bridging).  I will also cover some reasons why I think that thorough conformance and interoperability testing, especially in that type of a Converged Data Center, is important.

IOL Student Employees: Gaining Experience, Making Connections and Building a FutureWe also learn valuable intangible skills, such as communicating with vendors from across the world, understanding the financial side of business, and managing our time. Not only are we expected to work through summer and winter vacations, but during the school year as well. High Performance Computing at the IOLThanks to generous donations by multiple OFA member companies, the OFA Logo Group at the UNH-IOL has an HPC cluster of 48 centrally managed compute nodes (a total of 544 processing cores).  Using this cluster, the UNH-IOL tests Infiniband Host Channel Adaptors (HCAs), iWARP RDMA Network Interface Cards (RNICs), Infiniband switches and storage targets.

Basics of DSL Bonded Physical Layer TestingFigure 1 below shows a simplified view of the cross-talk noise experienced by one CPE and one DSLAM port, when operating in the presence of a second pair of transceivers.  In the figure, the red arrows depict the two types of cross-talk noise experienced by the CPE’s receiver, while the blue arrows depict the two noises experienced by the DSLAM’s receiver.  The Far End Cross-talk (FEXT) is the noise signal that results from the signal of a transmitter located on the other end of the local loop cross coupling onto the wire pair used by the DSLAM and CPE 1.  The Near End Cross-talk (NEXT) is the noise signal that results from the signal of a transmitter located on the same side of the local loop cross coupling onto the wire pair used by the DSLAM and CPE 1.  The reference point for establishing a “near” or “far” location is always the receiver experiencing the noise.
